I visited Rob Brezsny’s site today as I often do. He combines part astrology with part poetry with part therapy each Tuesday in the form of a horoscope. He also shares passages from his book PRONOIA: Is the Antidote for Paranoia (How The Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You With Blessings) that are thought-provoking and amusing. He listed today dire predictions people made about ideas they thought were ridiculous.

“Guitar music is on the way out.” Decca Records turning down the Beatles, 1962

“There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” Ken Olson, President of Digitial Equipment Corp. 1977.

To read the whole amusing list go here.

Yesterday, I wrote about how I don’t believe we are innovating at the same level as we did in the past. I don’t agree with Charles H. Duell, Director of the US Patent Office, 1899 (well not totally anyway) when he said, “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” We have many new and as of today unimagined techno gadgets to invent . My question is will they allow us to do things faster and cheaper or will they allow us to put the needs of humanity and planet Earth first. Maybe if the world really goes crazy we could do both.

I believe we have many more things to invent. It is within the categories of inventions that I wish we would eliminate one:

ENERGY AND HOW TO HARNESS IT

COMMUNICATION AND HOW TO SHARE IT

SHELTER

TRANSPORTATION

ARTS

FOOD PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION

GENOCIDE

MEDICINE AND HEATHCARE

In art, we went from sharing images on cave walls to putting images on animal skins to putting them on paper and then on film and that as digital 0 and 1’s. But it is still art. Medicine we used natural herbs and then lab produced pharmaceuticals and now many are back to natural herbs again. Shelter we lived in caves and then cabins/huts/teepees and then “houses” and condominiums… For some with MCS we were forced back to living in caves and tents again.

We could of course argue that there is only one category which humans “invented”. Fission, fusion, electricity, solar, hydro and wind power all existed long before us. If you’ve watched a Bird of Paradise dance or listen to a robin sing — we did not invent the arts. Animals walked, swam and flew and hitched rides long before we did. Cats have their own healthcare for a sick stomach — they eat grass and puke.

Genocide seems to be the only “invention” that humans can claim total responsibility. This is not new. My DNA reveals that the hominid species of Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans all lived at the same time. So where did the other branches of my hominid heritage go? We could of course ask the carrier pigeon, woolly mammoth or dodo bird — but they are extinct at the hands of what we now call humans as well.

We have not learned from causing the extinction of many other species. Do you think we will uninvent this category before our species its driven to extinction?

I’d like to hear your thoughts before I share more of mine. I hope you give only peace and love today.

Love,

Colleen
